Routine Equine Care
Cheyenne River Animal Hospital provides routine and basic veterinary care for horses. Our equine services are focused on preventive care, common medical concerns, basic diagnostics, and selected procedures that can reasonably be provided through our mixed-animal practice. Some conditions may require advanced diagnostics, specialized treatment, hospitalization, or
referral to an equine-focused facility. Services may vary depending on the veterinarian available, the needs of the individual horse, and our ability to safely provide the appropriate level of care.
Equine Dentistry
We offer routine dental examinations and power floating under sedation. We do not currently provide dental extractions or advanced dental procedures.
Lameness Evaluation
We provide initial in-house evaluation of common lameness concerns and may use examination, hoof testers, or digital radiographs when appropriate. Horses requiring advanced lameness diagnostics, specialized imaging, or treatment may be referred to an equine specific facility.
Wound Care
We evaluate and treat many routine wounds and injuries. More extensive injuries or cases requiring advanced surgical or hospital care may require referral.
Pregnancy Confirmation
We offer pregnancy diagnosis by palpation and/or ultrasound for established pregnancies when appropriate. Our reproductive services are intended primarily for pregnancy confirmation and do not include advanced reproductive evaluation, infertility investigation, or high-risk pregnancy
management.
General Medicine & Preventive Care
We provide basic examination and treatment for many common equine illnesses and concerns, along with routine vaccinations, parasite-control recommendations, and preventive care.
Basic diagnostic testing may be available through our clinic when appropriate. Horses requiring
advanced diagnostics, intensive treatment, hospitalization, specialty care, or procedures beyond the scope of our practice may be referred to another veterinary facility.
Coggins Testing
Cheyenne River Animal Hospital is a USDA-certified Coggins laboratory and provides Coggins testing for equine infectious anemia.
Turnaround time is generally prompt, with expedited testing available when scheduling allows. An additional fee may apply for results needed within 72 hours. Please contact the clinic for current testing timelines or to schedule a Coggins test.
A current negative Coggins test is commonly required for interstate travel and may also be required for horse shows, sales, or other events. Requirements can vary by destination and event, so owners are encouraged to confirm current requirements before travel. If needed, please contact the clinic with your travel or event information and we can help determine what documentation may be required.
Health Certificates
We provide interstate health certificates for horses when examination and testing requirements can be completed through our clinic. Please contact us ahead of planned travel so current destination requirements can be reviewed.
